Overview

Fitted for trade work, factory-direct

A containerised workshop is a fitted workspace for tool-based work, equipment maintenance, and machinery housing, built on an ISO container shell rather than converted on site. SCS Global manufactures the shipping container workshop range factory-direct: workbenches, shelving, and electrical go in on the production line, and the finished unit ships worldwide as a standard container. The workshop line sits within our container offices and workspace solutions , fitted for trade work where the offices are fitted for desks. Formats run 20ft and 40ft core with a 10ft compact option, delivered ready to connect to site power.

Specifications

Workshop Specifications and Fitout

Standard workshop fit-out includes heavy-duty workbenches, wall shelving and racking, and pre-installed LED lighting and power outlets on an RCD-protected switchboard, with ventilation and air conditioning options. The electrical system is installed on the production line within the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules framework, so the unit connects to site power and runs. Walls and ceiling carry 50 mm EPS panelling, the flooring is heavy-duty and rated for equipment support, and access pairs a side-opening design for machinery and materials with a lockable steel personnel door. Security runs from high-security locks and a lockbox to surveillance options. Custom exterior paint and branding are applied at the factory. The 20ft container workshop is the market default, and the 40ft doubles the floor area for machinery housing, with a 10ft compact option for tool storage.

The Workshop Line

Container Workshop Solutions

A container workshop is a fitted ISO container workspace for tool-based work, equipment maintenance, and machinery housing, with workbenches, power, and ventilation built in at the factory. Mine sites, construction contractors, and industrial yards buy them for the same job: a lockable, weatherproof workspace that arrives fitted and is working the day it lands. Most container workshops are used freight boxes modified in a local yard. SCS builds the workshop as a workshop: a purpose-built new shell with apertures framed during fabrication, fitted out on the same Yixing production line as our office range.

Compliance

Compliance and Certification

Onshore container workshops are built on ISO 668 shells with CSC container-safety certification for international transport confirmed per build at quote stage, NCC-compliant fit-out materials where an Australian site classifies the unit as a building, and AS/NZS 3000 electrical covering the switchboard, RCD protection, GPO outlets and lighting circuits. Region D cyclonic deployments carry tie-down and wind-load engineering documentation under AS/NZS 1170. One boundary matters at specification: workshops for offshore platforms carry a different certification set, DNV 2.7-1 and 2.7-2, and are a separate SCS product line covered at our offshore workshop containers page.

ISO certification ISO
Bureau Veritas certification Bureau Veritas
DNV certification DNV
Lloyd's Register certification Lloyd's Register
Bureau International des Containers (BIC) certification BIC
American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certification ABS

Configuration Options

Workshop Fit-Out Options

The fit-out is specified at order and installed on the production line, so the workshop arrives matched to the trade or equipment it will serve. Bench and rack layouts beyond the standard set are engineered as custom work.

Workbenches

Heavy-duty workbenches included as standard, laid out to the trade.

Shelving and Racking

Wall shelving, custom shelves and racking, and equipment racks fixed to the shell.

Partition Splits

Partition options split bench space from lockable storage where a site needs both in one shell.

Ventilation

Louvre or whirlybird roof vents matched to the work inside.

Climate Control

Split-system air conditioning option on the weatherproof shell.

Security

High-security locks, lockbox, and surveillance options.

Exterior Finish

Custom exterior paint colour and branding applied at the factory.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions trade and site teams ask most often about container workshops.

What size container is best for a workshop?

A 20ft workshop, around 12 m², is the default for a single trade: bench along one wall, racking opposite, clear floor between. Move to a 40ft, around 26 m², for machinery housing, bigger crews, or a partitioned workshop-and-store split. A 10ft compact covers tool storage on tight sites.

Can a container workshop have 3-phase power?

The standard electrical fit-out is pre-installed at the factory: a switchboard with RCD protection, GPO outlets, and LED lighting, wired within AS/NZS 3000. Machinery supply, including three-phase provision and dedicated equipment circuits, is specified at quote stage against the machinery the workshop will run.

Can a container workshop be relocated between sites?

Yes. A mobile workshop container keeps its ISO corner castings, so the fitted unit lifts by crane or side-loader and trucks between sites like any other container. Benches, racking, and the electrical fit-out are fixed to the shell and travel in place. Disconnect power, lift, relocate, reconnect.

How is a container workshop delivered and installed?

Fitted and in one piece: the workshop container arrives with benches, racking, lighting, and the switchboard installed at the factory, so site preparation is a level pad or footings. Delivery is by tilt tray, side-loader, or crane depending on size and access. Connect site power and the workshop is operational, with no construction required.

What about offshore shutdown and workshop containers?

Offshore platform workshops are a separate SCS product line, built and certified for crane transfer and offshore service rather than onshore site duty. If your unit is headed for a platform or vessel, start at our offshore workshop container range instead. This page covers the onshore standard range.
